Nature Education Programs in Buffer

Praful Sawarkar

Nature education is a key pillar of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve’s (TATR) conservation efforts, especially when it comes to engaging the local communities living in and around the buffer zone.

TATR regularly conducts nature awareness and education programs for local women, youth, and shepherds. These initiatives aim to build a deeper understanding of the critical role forests and wildlife play in ecological balance and local development.

Key highlights of the program :

  • Sensitization sessions are conducted across buffer villages to emphasize the community’s role in forest conservation and human–wildlife conflict mitigation.
  • Participants are educated on how deforestation, overgrazing, and illegal forest produce collection impact biodiversity and long-term livelihoods.
  • Discussions also include the benefits of ecotourism, state-run compensation schemes, and the importance of coexistence with wildlife.
  • Awareness is also raised about various alternative livelihood initiatives run by TATR, which reduce forest dependency and promote sustainable income opportunities.

These community-driven education programs create lasting awareness, build trust, and strengthen TATR’s relationship with its conservation partners—the people who have protected these forests for generations.
