Shepherd Sensitization Program

Praful Sawarkar

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve has launched a unique sensitization initiative aimed at educating shepherds on conflict prevention and safety measures related to human-wildlife interactions.

Shepherds, often elderly and illiterate, regularly graze livestock in buffer zones and are among the most vulnerable to wildlife encounters. This program helps equip them with essential knowledge and tools to reduce risk.

Key Highlights :

  • Over 300 shepherds from 7 forest ranges and 95 villages have participated so far.
  • Focus is on understanding the behavior of tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and snakes, and learning how to avoid surprise encounters.
  • Shepherds are educated that most attacks are accidental, not deliberate.
  • They are provided with bamboo sticks fitted with jingling bells and blunt iron tips to alert wildlife of human presence and prevent conflict.
  • A special wildlife safari was organized to help shepherds observe animals in their natural habitat—many for the first time.
  • Sessions are led by TATR’s Education Officer and include interactive discussions, encouraging open dialogue.

This program not only builds awareness but also strengthens community involvement in conservation and safety in wildlife-rich landscapes.
